|News, Violent crime , Hate crime

Update 5 April 2022: All three defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment with Jason Edwards and Lee Strickland ordered to serve a minimum of 32 years and 123 days. The youth defendant was ordered to serve a minimum of 17 years and 125 days.

Two men and a teenage girl have been convicted of murdering a consultant psychiatrist in Cardiff’s Bute Park last year.

Jason Edwards, 25, Lee Strickland, 36, and the teenager attacked Dr Gary Jenkins in the early hours of the morning of 20 July 2021. Another man heard the attack and tried to intervene and was also assaulted by the three defendants.

CCTV from the city centre showed the defendants leaving the park after the attack laughing and hugging.

Thomas Edwards of the CPS said: “The level of violence from all three defendants was truly shocking, with the evidence showing that they appeared to enjoy the cruelty of what they were doing.

“Throughout the court process our thoughts have remained with the family and friends of Dr Jenkins, who is so clearly missed.”
Sentence will take place at a later date.
