Serving and former police officers charged with misconduct in public office

|News

Rosemary Ainslie, Head of Special Crime at the CPS, said: “Following a referral of evidence by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the CPS has authorised charges against one serving and one former West Midlands Police officer for misconduct in public office.

“PC Anthony Ritchie and former officer Steven Walters will appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 23 April for their first hearing.

“The alleged misconduct involving PC Ritchie occurred between 2014 and 2018 and that involving Steven Walters took place in 2013.

“The function of the CPS is not to decide whether a person is guilty of a criminal offence, but to make fair, independent and objective assessments about whether it is appropriate to present charges to a court to consider.

“Criminal proceedings are active and nothing should be published that could jeopardise the defendants right to a fair trial.”
