Secondment to the CPS Extradition Unit

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is inviting applications from suitably qualified advocates to work on a full time basis as part of the in-house CPS Extradition Unit.

Any successful applicants will be engaged as Senior Crown Prosecutors on a fixed term contract lasting six months with a possible extension to 12 months.

The purpose of the secondment is to support the work of the Extradition Team during a period of changing workload and staffing profile. In addition, it is intended to serve as a stepping stone towards application for membership of the Extradition Advocates’ Panel.

Recruitment will be carried out through the submission of a covering letter and CV. This will be followed up by an informal meeting with shortlisted candidates.

Previous experience of extradition cases is not required for this application but may be an advantage.

All applicants are expected to be able to demonstrate the following:

  • How they are motivated by the work of the CPS
  • Reasons for taking an interest in extradition work
  • One example of single-handedly dealing with a complex legal issue as an advocate
  • One example of single-handedly dealing with a complex legal issue through drafting a document or series of documents
  • One example of team working where personal objectives were sacrificed for the sake of the wider goal or team objective.

Applicants will be working not only as lawyers but also as civil servants during their secondment period. This will require successful applicants to work as part of a large team consisting of lawyers, paralegals and administrators as well as working professionally with members of both the private and public sector.

The current starting salary for a Senior Crown Prosecutor working in London is £50,519 per annum.

All offers of appointment are subject to candidates being able to pass 'SC' level security clearance checks.
