Please note that the 2016 Panel runs until December 2020 when it will be withdrawn and replaced by the 2020 Panel.
Guidance and the Application Process Toggle accordion
The current iteration of the CPS Advocate Panel for General Crime and Rape and Child Sexual Abuse runs from 2016 to 2020.
The aim is to appoint advocates who have met the respective selection criteria and have relevant, up to date skills and experience. Any advocate appointed must be able to deliver high-quality prosecution advocacy services and have a commitment to meet the aims and objectives of the CPS.

New Joiner – Level 1 Toggle accordion
Applications to join the CPS Advocate Panel for General Crime at level 1 can be submitted any time, provided the applicant meets the qualification requirement and, for barristers, has reached the fifth month of the first six months of pupillage.
All advocates appointed to join the Panel must meet the relevant selection criteria and agree to abide by the Advocate Panel Members’ Commitment.
New Joiner – Levels 2, 3 and 4 Toggle accordion
The next opportunity to become a permanent member of the CPS Advocate Panel for General Crime as a at levels 2, 3 or 4 will be in September 2020. Please visit the 'Advocate Panels: 2020 Panel - General Crime and the Rape List' page for further details.
Upgrade Applications Toggle accordion
The next opportunity for existing members of the CPS Advocate Panel to upgrade by one level to level 2, 3 or 4 will be in September 2020. Please visit the 'Advocate Panels: 2020 Panel - General Crime and the Rape List' page for further details.
Temporary Membership Toggle accordion
Applications from non-Panel members who wish to join the CPS Advocate Panel for General Crime at level 2, 3 or 4 as a temporary member can be submitted between 1 November and 31 July each year.
Temporary membership automatically expires when results of the next annual application window exercise are announced. Accordingly, temporary members who wish to remain on the Panel must apply for permanent membership during the next application window.
Temporary membership is not open to advocates who have been previously unsuccessful in applying to join the Advocate Panel as a permanent member or to existing Advocate Panel members seeking temporary membership at a higher level or to advocates who have previously held temporary membership during the currency of the present Panel.
Rape and Child Sexual Abuse List (‘the Rape List’) Toggle accordion
Applications from existing permanent members of the Advocate Panel for General Crime at levels 3 or 4 to join the Rape and Child Abuse list of specialist advocates can be submitted at any time of the year.
Permanent members at level 2 applying to upgrade to level 3 may also apply to the Rape List during the annual application window in September.
Appeals Process Toggle accordion
Applicants who have received the outcome of their application will have been advised whether they were successful or unsuccessful for the level applied for. Where the applicant was unsuccessful for either the level applied for or the next level down they may appeal.
