Text transcript of the video

Hello, I'm Martin Goldman, and I'm the Chief Crown Prosecutor for Yorkshire and Humberside.

This is made up of North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside, and I serve a population of about five million people. I have about 650 staff, and we prosecute 90,000 cases a year, ranging from minor road traffic cases up to the most serious cases, about 11,000 of which are in the Crown Court, including homicide cases, serious sexual offences, child abuse, organised crime and drugs offences.

As chief crown prosecutor for Yorkshire and Humberside, I am determined to be open and accountable, so that members of the public, victims and witnesses can understand the decisions that we take. Those decisions should be explained in plain English, so that anyone can appreciate the basis on which we make our decisions, and can have confidence in our prosecutors in terms of the decisions that they take and the service that they provide.

I understand that, behind the decisions that we take, there are victims and witnesses who are seriously worried about prosecutions, seriously worried about attending court, and can be seriously worried about supporting the prosecution through the criminal courts. We need to provide support to victims and witnesses, and we are determined to do it as best as we possibly can.

Even though these are very difficult financial times, I am confident that, by relentlessly focussing on the quality and efficiency of what we do, and by engaging better and better with you, the members of the public, that we can achieve better and better prosecution results.

Finally, I never forget that we are a public service: here to serve the people of Yorkshire and Humberside. With your help and your feedback, I am very confident that we can continue to deliver a high-quality prosecution service.
