Grimsby man sentenced after trying to set fire to himself at petrol pump

Vilmantas Zuikis has today been sentenced to 16 months in prison after attempting to set fire to himself at a petrol station on Cleethorpes Rd, Grimsby. Brandishing the petrol hose in one hand and a cigarette lighter in the other, he attempted to ignite the fuel, but was prevented from doing so by quick-thinking staff at the garage.

When asked to explain his actions, he replied that he was 'struggling to cope with life.

Jeremy Evans, Crown Advocate CPS Yorkshire and Humberside said:"It need hardly be said that this was a supremely stupid action whose consequences could have been catastrophic. Thanks to the quick thinking of the forecourt staff, who immediately de-activated the pump when they  saw what was happening, a far more serious incident was averted.
