Drug addict gets life for string of brutal attacks

A drug addict who committed a string of robberies and brutal attacks on elderly and vulnerable women has been sentenced to life at Leeds Crown Court today, CPS West Yorkshire has announced.

Lesley Rawlins from CPS West Yorkshire said:

"Mark Glasswell presents a very grave risk to the public and to elderly women in particular.  In order to obtain money to fund his drug addiction, over a period of three days in September 2010 he committed a string of brutal and cowardly attacks on vulnerable elderly ladies, as well as robbing two small shops in central Leeds.

"It is difficult to imagine a more horrifying chain of events, which has left the victims with permanent and debilitating mental and physical injuries. Sadly the last victim has died, leaving the terrifying events of her ordeal to dominate her last days.

"We would like to pay tribute to the great dignity and bravery of the victims in helping us to build a robust case against this dangerous offender.  We hope that the sentence handed down today offers the victims and their families some small comfort."
