Benefit Fraudster Jailed for Using Dead Brother's ID

A fraudster who used the identity of his dead brother to falsely claim benefits has been jailed.

42 year old Nigel Sharpe appeared at Barnsley Magistrates Court charged with money laundering under the Proceeds of Crime Act following an investigation conducted by DWP Fraud Investigation Service.

Sharpe pleaded guilty at the first hearing and was later sentenced to 26 weeks in curstody.

Prosecutor Ben Reid said: "Nigel Sharpe stole the identity of his dead baby brother to claim a host of benefits so that he could pay off his debts."

It is believed that around £19,000 was falsely claimed.
