Work Experience
The CPS is actively involved in the government's "Get Britain Working" work placement initiative. We have pledged to offer ten two week work experience placements to young people aged 18 - 24 on jobseekers allowance.
We have an important part to play in increasing these young people's chances of obtaining paid employment. By inviting them into the CPS we can provide opportunities enabling them to develop key work related skills and gain an insight into working life. Most importantly we can make a tangible impact in helping them make their first step towards finding a job.
We do not generally offer mini-pupillages, internships, voluntary work or job shadowing of lawyers.
Support for Law Students
CPS Yorkshire and Humberside works with local local Law Schools to provide information on the role of the CPS, roles within the CPS and specific aspects of our work.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Martin Goldman recently gave a lecture to students at Bradford Law School and will be speaking to students at Sheffield Law School in the near future.
If you would like a member of the CPS to speak at your University (which must be based in Yorkshire and Humberside) please call 0114 2298130.
National Legal Trainee Scheme
In 2012 the CPS re-launched its Legal Trainee Scheme (LTS), offering pupillages or training contracts for those seeking to complete their legal training and qualify as fully practicing lawyers.
The recruitment process opened on 19 April 2012 to those prospective candidates who had already completed their vocational training or were due to complete it in the 2011/12 academic year, enabling them to commence pupillage or a training contract in October 2012.
More than 1000 people applied and the overall standard was high. 17 legal trainees have now started across the country.
For more details about the application period please see the CPS Careers page.
For an insight into what the CPS LTS can lead to, please read the profile from one of our former Legal Trainees, Senior Crown Prosecutor Salma Yousef.
A day in the life of a lawyer
The role of a lawyer is challenging, satisfying and varied. No two days are the same but here's a typical day of a CPS lawyer working in the office and at court.
A typical day for a lawyer may look something like this:
8am - You have an early meeting with two detectives who have arrested a suspect last night for murder. You consider the evidence and charge the suspect.
10am - In the office you prepare case papers on a fraud case that a colleague will present in the Crown Court next month.
11.30am - Following a telephone call with a police officer, you charge two suspects with burglary charging authority is sent to the police electronically
2pm - You walk across to the Magistrates Court to prosecute two trials
In the first trial, the defendant pleads guilty when he sees that the assault victim (his partner) attends court. He is sentenced to four months imprisonment.
In the second trial, the defendant pleads not guilty to dangerous driving. The trial proceeds. You cross examine the defendant. He says he did not jump the red light causing a major collision- contrary to the prosecution evidence. He is convicted and the case is adjourned for pre-sentence reports.
