Son found guilty of the murder of his mother

Josef Cupori, aged 24, has today been found guilty at Stafford Crown Court of the murder of his 44 year-old mother, Anna Cuporiova, at an address in Stoke-on-Trent last year.

Police were called to the house on Friday 4 March 2011after the youngest son found his mother dead with her throat cut.

Sue Hanson, Senior Crown Prosecutor from West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said: "This was a very tragic case of a son killing his mother after a petty row over money.

"At the outset, this case appeared very straight forward as all the evidence pointed to Josef Cupori as the obvious culprit. However, as the case progressed his defence team raised the issue of diminished responsibility on the basis that he was suffering from an abnormality of mind at the time of the offence.

"The defendant therefore pleaded guilty to manslaughter but not guilty to murder.

"These pleas were not accepted by the Crown as the evidence of his conduct immediately after the killing suggested that he was functioning normally. To assist the jury, both the prosecution and defence had to call expert witnesses to help them resolve the issue.

"Having had an opportunity to listen to all the facts of the case as well as expert evidence, they have today found Cupori guilty of murder.

"I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the prosecution team for all their work in bringing Josef Cuproi to justice."

The defendant will be sentenced later in the year.
