Men guilty of drive-by shooting

Two men have today been found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court and sentenced to a total of 11 ½ years for possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence after an incident which occurred on 2nd August 2012.

Mohammed Rahman, 23, and Aleem Shabir, 24, fired a shotgun out of a moving car at Mr Afzal on Witton Road in Aston, injuring him in the leg.

Lucy Harding, Senior Crown Prosecutor from the West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said:

"It is believed these men targeted Mr Afzal after an earlier altercation, deciding to shoot him from a moving car.

"Rahman and Shabir contested this allegation and their innocence has been dismissed by the jury.

"Luckily for their intended victim the injuries were relatively minor after being shot by a shotgun at close quarters.

"However this incident could have had a completely different outcome if Rahman and Shabir had hit their target as they had intended or if they had hit someone else in the vicinity as they discharged the shotgun from a moving car.

"This type of blatant disregard for society and human life is completely unacceptable and the conviction of these young men today should act as a deterrent to anyone who feels they can act in such a violent and lawless way."
