Man sentenced to life for murdering drinking partner

Derek Law, aged 29, has today been found guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court of the murder of Jagjit Singh Villhku, whose body was found in rough parkland in January this year.

Martin Lindop, Sector Crown Prosecutor from West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Derek Law has today been found guilty of brutally battering to death Jagjit Singh Villkhu, who by all accounts was his drinking partner.

"Forensic scientific evidence played a key part in this case as experts in blood pattern evidence were able to demonstrate the particles of blood found on the defendants clothing, which he wore the night of the murder, where consistent with the wearer of those clothes being in very close proximity to airborne blood which had been generated as a result of the attack on Mr Villkhu.

"Law has been given ample opportunities to confess to why he committed such a heinous crime, but he has refused to explain his actions that winter's night. However, today he has been found guilty of murder.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the police for their investigation as well as the witnesses who supported the prosecution case.

"Finally, our thoughts are with Mr Villhku's family and we hope that todays verdict can bring a sense of closure to them and that they can start to move on with their lives."
