Man jailed for sexually abusing a child and distributing child sexual images

A 33-year-old man from Sutton Coldfield, who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child and sharing online indecent images of children, including the sexual abuse he carried out on a child, has today been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court.

Intelligence was forwarded to the police from America of a Kik instant messenger user based in the West Midlands who was sharing indecent images of children.

A police investigation linked the user to a property in Sutton Coldfield from where Craig Palmer was arrested and a number of electronic devices were seized. The images also showed systematic sexual abuse of a young child over a period of time, that abuse having been shared by way of images.

The defendant later pleaded guilty to the following offences:

  • Sexual assault of a child under 13 x 8
  • Making indecent photographs of children x 8
  • Distributing an indecent photograph of a child x 3
  • Causing of inciting child prostitution or pornography
  • Possessing extreme pornographic images
  • Possessing prohibited images

Julia Mcsorley, Senior Crown Prosecutor from the West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said:

"Craig Palmer was not only motivated to commit these crimes due to his sexual gratification, but his desire share those desires with others.

"Not only did Palmer view indecent images, he also committed the sexual abuse, uploaded the images and shared the images with other users.

"The CPS is working with agencies in the UK and abroad to identify and robustly prosecute those individuals who use the internet to share and view indecent images of children."
