Man jailed for life for sexually exploiting vulnerable women

A man who targeted and sexually exploited vulnerable young women in the Stoke-on-Trent area for over two decades has today been sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 13 and-a-half years.

Clive Brown, aged 43, pleaded guilty to a number of sexual offences which included rape, indecent assault and inciting prostitution for gain.

Between 1988 and 2009, the defendant would engineer himself into the lives of the complainants, they described how, to begin with, he would use generosity, charm, care and attentiveness, one of them even described him as a 'perfect gentleman'.

He would induce the women into what they believed would be consensual and meaningful sexual relationship.

Having commenced a sexual relationship - the defendant would seek to control the complainants - very often seeking to use the woman for his own gratification on his own terms, whether they wanted to have sex or not.  Unwittingly, the complainants were being introduced into a world of sexual exploitation.

This exploiting was not confined to his own benefit. In some cases, the defendant would seek to sexualise a complainant into sexual activity with others - either in the form of group sex or encouraging them to sleep with other men.

With that background, the exploitation of the complainants involved the commission of acts of rape, indecent assault, and in some cases the procurement or incitement into a world of prostitution - often local massage parlours in the Stoke area. Some complainants were then to work as prostitutes on the internet and work in other parts of the country.

In some situations, the defendant would seek to secure control and compliance of such women by the use or threat of violence.

Lisa Newman, Senior Crown Prosecutor from the West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said:

"Clive Brown is an extremely dangerous man who has targeted and manipulated young vulnerable woman for his own personal gain over a number of years.

"I would like to thank the very brave victims who came forwarded and supported the prosecution team. Without exception the lives of each of them has taken a very different path as a result of meeting Clive Brown and they continue to live with the consequences of their involvement with him to this day. As a result of their support we have brought a dangerous sexual predator to justice."
