A 67 year old man was yesterday found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court of the murder of Gillian Rennie, aged 58, by inflicting multiple stab wounds and today sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

Brian Mason, attacked Gillian Rennie, a long standing friend, when she visited him at his home in Croydon Rd, Erdington on 18th December 2011. Her body was discovered there some four days later after Mason approached a market police patrol officer and intimated that he had killed his girlfriend.

Hayley Firman, Sector Crown Prosecutor from the West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said:

"This is a tragic case in which a woman has lost her life in a brutal and frenzied way. Mason stabbed Gillian numerous times in an attack by a man who she had known for some years.

"Gillian's death was a brutal end to her life and we hope that yesterday's conviction and today's sentence will go some way to helping her family and friends come to terms with her death."
