Honour Killers Found Guilty

26/06/2008

Clare Stevens, of CPS West Yorkshire's Complex Casework Unit said:

"On the night of the 11th February last year, 29 year old Mian Shahid Mehmood was taken to a country lane in Halifax and was shot in the back.

"Three men from Sheffield (Naveed Mahmood, John Reeves and Sam Lee) had travelled from their home town that night with the sole intention of carrying out the murder.

"They had been hired by Mian Shaheed Mahmoods brother-in-law Arza Khan, who, quite simply wanted him dead.

"Mian Mehmood's crime had been to marry Arza Khan's sister a union which the family disapproved of.

"Over the last few days, the 4 men involved in this killing have been found guilty of murder and today have each received a life sentence.

"Cases such as these are complex they are premeditated and can involve a number of individuals. However, as this case demonstrates, by working together, the police and the Crown Prosecution Service can ensure that all individuals involved in these so-called honour killings whether they organise the killing or carry it out can be prosecuted and brought to justice."
