'You Be The Judge' in Inside Justice Week 2007
02/10/2007
Have you ever wanted to know more about sentencing and how judges make their decisions? Then take part in our interactive 'You be the Judge' event where YOU can choose the sentence that fits the crime.
Residents of West Yorkshire are being given theopportunity to hear criminal cases and give their verdict on which sentence best fits the crime as part of an interactive event being held during Inside Justice Week.
The aim of the event is to explain the different types of sentence available, how Judges make their decisions and to explore public views on sentencing in general terms.
This will include an interactive "ask the audience" style session - example cases will be outlined, and audience members will be asked to vote on what sentence they feel the defendant should have received.
The actual sentence given will then be revealed, and a Judge will give their view on the factors that would have influenced this decision. A defence and CPS lawyer will also be on hand.
The 'You be the Judge' event is taking place at the Carlisle Business Centre, Bradford between 1:30pm and 4:30pm on Tuesday November 6th 2007 and is being hosted by the West Yorkshire Criminal Justice Board.
The event is taking place during Inside Justice Week, a national initiative aimed at opening up the Criminal Justice Syetem to the public.
West Yorkshire Criminal Justice Board is made up of Chief Officers from the Police, Probation Service, Courts, the Crown Prosecution Service, Youth Offending team and Prison.
