What we do

You probably hear about us on a daily basis:

'Local woman charged with theft'; 'Man convicted of dangerous driving'. Used to hearing headlines like this?

If so you are used to hearing about what we do to make your community a safer place.

We are the legal professionals who decide whether someone should be prosecuted, advise the Police, West Mercia Constabulary, on what charges to bring and present cases in courts throughout the area. Surveys show that crime is falling and is less widespread than people think. In 2007-2008 we prosecuted over 36,000 people throughout the Area, a reduction of over 4% on the previous year.  The majority of crimes are the more minor type of offences, for example did you know that motoring offences account for almost half of all the crimes we prosecute and offences against individuals account for around only 12% of all crimes?

Whether to Prosecute?

Ever heard that a crime is not being prosecuted and wondered why?

When we look at whether to prosecute a crime we have to decide whether:

  • there is enough evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.

and

  • whether it is in the public interest to do so

For further details on how these decisions are made and circumstances which are likely to lead to a prosecution see the Code for Crown Prosecutors.

Victims and Witnesses

Victims and witnesses of crime are at the very heart of what we do and we work with the police and other organisations to help support them. For up to date information visit our victims and witness page.
