Schools' Project
In 2007, CPS Derbyshire developed a programme of two interactive lessons for 11-16-year-olds to help them understand more about the CPS and the Criminal Justice System.
The project is currently being rolled out across the Crown Prosecution Service and staff here in CPS Wessex have started to deliver the lessons in schools. The lessons form part of the citizenship curriculum and are designed to foster understanding of the criminal justice system from witnessing a crime, through to giving evidence in court. They give pupils the opportunity to review a mock CPS file and decide whether the defendants in the case should be prosecuted. CPS Wessex is committed to taking the project to as many schools in our region as possible.
Where we have taken the project
So far in 2010 we have delivered lessons in the following schools:
- Applemore School, Hampshire
- Oasis Academy, Hampshire
- Waterside School, Hampshire
- Royal Manor, Dorset
- Islamic Saturday School hosted by Bournemouth Islamic Centre, Dorset
- Wotton Bassett School, Wiltshire
- St Luke's, Wiltshire
Comments from pupils
We have received very positive feedback from students who have taken part in the Schools' Project, here are some of their comments:
"I think that lesson has been really good for us because we have been learning about courts and prosecution."
"This has been really enjoyable because we have acted and done lots of stuff."
"I've had a good day because I have learnt what a dock is and what's a crime."
