Jason Packer sentenced for possessing extreme pornography and indecent images of children

Jason Packer, 45, from Portsmouth, was sentenced on Monday 21 December to 12 months' imprisonment at Portsmouth Crown Court for four offences of possessing extreme pornography and 13 counts of possessing indecent images of children. He had been acquitted of one offence of possessing extreme pornography.

Following sentencing, John Montague Senior District Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in Wessex said: "Jason Packer has committed despicable crimes. Possessing indecent images of children contribute to the continuous sexual abuse of children.

"The court during his trial at Portsmouth Crown Court in August heard how he accused the police or the technical expert of planting the evidence, including 2435 images of children being sexually abused, on his computer and insisted he had nothing to do with the images.

"The jury also heard that in one of his interviews he disputed what age a child was classified and stated that a child was someone who was only under 12 years old. He accepted however at the end of that interview the legal definition, which defines anyone under 18 as a child.

"The images found on his computer ranged from category A to C, and the children's ages varied from 5 to 14.

"The jury had to decide whether in relation to the extreme pornography offences, the images were real images and in relation to the indecent images charges whether the subjects involved were children.

"After hearing both the defence and prosecution case, the jury was satisfied that Jason Packer had in his possession extreme pornography and indecent images of children.

"Thanks to a thorough investigation from Hampshire Police, CPS Wessex was able to bring Jason Packer before the court and he was today sentenced for these offences."
