Eight charged following investigation into child abuse

The Crown Prosecution Service in Wessex has authorised Hampshire Constabulary to charge eight individuals with sexual child abuse.

John Locke, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in Wessex, said: "I have authorised Hampshire Constabulary to charge seven men and a woman with a total of 61 charges mainly of sexual assaults against children under the age of 16 and 13 years old.

"One male and five females aged now 14 to 26 years, were allegedly the victims of sexual abuse between 1988 and 2009 at addresses in Basingstoke, Bishops Green [Hampshire], Blackpool, Blackburn, Lytham St Annes [Lancashire], Reading [Berkshire] and parts of London.

"It is also alleged that a woman now aged 40, was also the victim of sexual abuse between 1977 and 1984, bringing a total number of seven victims.

"We have worked closely with Hampshire Constabulary right from the outset in what appears to be an opportunist group of paedophiles. It is alleged that the offences were committed, in Berkshire, Hampshire, Lancashire and some parts of London.

"We would like to remind the media that court proceedings are now active and that they should not publish anything leading to the identification of the alleged victims.

"These defendants have been charged with serious offences and are entitled to a fair trial. It is extremely important that nothing should be reported, which could prejudice any trial.

The defendants will appear in court on 10 November at Andover Magistrates' Court.
