Swansea couple jailed for perverting the course of justice

A man who faked being in a coma in an attempt to evade trial for fraud has received a custodial sentence for perverting the course of justice.

His wife has also been jailed for her role in the deception.

Alan and Helen Knight had both previously pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. Helen Knight was jailed for 10 months at Swansea Crown Court. Alan Knight had 14 months added to his existing prison sentence for the fraud.

Mandy Tobias, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service Cymru-Wales, said: "Alan Knight was originally charged with fraud and forgery. Over a prolonged period of time, both he and Helen Knight sought to obstruct the criminal justice process by dishonest means. Their actions led to significant delays in the original trial process and took up a considerable amount of public resource.

"These are serious offences and hopefully this prosecution will prevent others from seeking to adopt such a course."
