Serving Gwent police officer jailed for assault

Stephen Smith, 34, appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on 22 June 2017 having been found guilty at an earlier hearing for unlawfully wounding of another man during a night out in Cardiff City Centre.

Smith was waiting to enter The Brewhouse on the evening of 12 March last year when he had a dispute with Jonathan Harris over the queuing system.  Words were exchanged between the two resulting in Smith grabbing Mr Harris by the throat and biting him to the lower lip area.

Deborah Rogers of CPS Cymru-Wales said: "Police officers are expected to protect the public and uphold justice regardless of the situations they find themselves in.  However, in this instance Smith reacted in a way that led him to be arrested himself."

The assault took place following a rugby international fixture in which a large number of people were in the city centre.

Smith received 12 months imprisonment as a result of his actions on that night and will now face a special case hearing with Gwent Police.

Deborah added: "The Crown Prosecution Service will apply the law with equal weight to anyone investigated regardless of their standing within the community."
