Company secretary steals nearly GBP 1 million

Susan Jones had worked for CK Supermarkets for about 20 years. At a previous hearing at Swansea Crown Court she admitted taking nearly £1 million from her employer over a four year period in order to pay off debts at her family's farm.

On 21 April 2017, the Judge sentenced her to 45 months' imprisonment after hearing Jones had abused her position as company secretary and made a series of false payments between May 2009 and June 2013. Some of those payments were to agricultural suppliers and a mortgage company who CK Supermarkets had no connection with.

Despite this she retained her employment on the understanding the money would be paid back. When there was no sign of repayment being made the Police were called.

Iwan Jenkins of the Crown Prosecution Service said: "This was a complex case which required expert evidence.

"Following analysis it became clear that Susan Jones was using her own system to keep track of the false payments.

"The CPS worked with the investigating officers closely from the outset, following the trail Jones left.

"There was a lot of documentary evidence to assess but we were able to demonstrate exactly what she had done, resulting in a guilty plea.
