A 74-year-old Colwyn Bay man has been sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court for a series of historic rapes and indecent assaults.

John Joseph Linegar was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He will also be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Iwan Jenkins, Head of the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit for CPS Cymru-Wales, said:

"The abuse committed by John Linegar over a sustained period was both reprehensible and shocking - and it is right that he has been made to face up to his actions in a criminal court.

"I applaud the courage of those who came forward to report what happened. It is their testimony that has resulted in Linegar's conviction for these callous and disgusting crimes.

"I hope that this case sends a clear message that all of us in the criminal justice system are committed to ensuring that serious offenders like Linegar are brought to justice. No matter when an offence was committed, we will seek to bring cases to court where the evidence supports them."
