Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Team

Nilam Salh, DCP, RASSO TeamNatalie Carter, DCP, RASSO TeamCPS Thames and Chiltern established a dedicated Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) Team in January 2014 to deal with cases of rape and serious sexual offences.

Staffed by specially trained lawyers the unit offers specialist legal advice, decision making and support to victims. The RASSO Team works closely with a number of other organisations, including the police, to improve the service that is offered to the victims of rape, child sexual abuse, and all other serious sexual offences.

The RASSO Team is managed by two District Crown Prosecutors - Nilam Salh and Natalie Carter (pictured).

The cases they deal with include:

  • rape cases, including attempted rape
  • child sexual abuse cases, including historic cases
  • all other serious sexual offences
  • all allegations of perverting the course of justice or wasting police time which arise from false accusations of rape and domestic violence.

There may be occasions where a case of this nature is so complex that it is referred to the CPS Thames and Chiltern Complex Casework Unit.

The RASSO unit does not deal with cases where children have been physically abused or neglected or cases of indecent photographs, unless they are linked to sexual abuse.
