Travel Lodge rapist jailed - Watford

A man from Sierra Leone, who raped a woman as she slept at the Travel Lodge in Watford, was jailed for 5 years today, Friday, 14 December 2012.

The 21-year-old victim woke up and was "frozen with fear" when she found Sahr Maningo on top of her, St Albans Crown Court heard.

Maningo of Salisbury Road, Haringey, London forced her to have oral sex and then ejaculated over her.

He was convicted by a jury of vaginal and oral rape on 02 October 2011. He was cleared of a charge of anal rape.

Defence barrister David Wolchover said Maningo had shown "sexual arrogance." The offence had been committed from immaturity and conceit, he said.

He said Maningo had come to the UK from Sierra Leone in 2007. He had attended North West London College in Willesden and obtained pass certificates in Maths, English, IT and Science and had stayed at the college to study Mechanical Foundation course.

Mr Wolchover said he had left his family's home after falling out with his step-father and was living in a small rented flat. He worked part time earning £90 a week and was in receipt of housing benefit. Maningo had no previous convictions.

Jailing him, Judge Andrew Bright QC said the rape left the woman "psychologically damaged and in need of therapy."

He told Maningo it is now a matter for the Border Agency to decide if he should be deported once he has served his sentence.
