Teenager charged with Lewsey Park incident - Luton

Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (MCU) to charge a teenage boy with attempted murder and rape.

The 15-year-old boy, from Luton, who canot be named for legal reasons, has been charged in connection with an incident, which occurred in Lewsey Park, Luton on the evening of Sunday, 19 January 2014.

The 14-year-old victim remains in a critical condition at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Adrian Foster, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)  said: "Following an investigation by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire MCU,  a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against this 15-year-old boy.

"Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire MCU to charge the boy with attempted murder and rape.

"The charges relate to the investigation into the attempted murder and rape of a 14-year-old girl in Lewsey Park, Luton on Sunday, 19 January 2014.

"The decision to charge was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

The boy has been remanded in police custody to appear at Luton Youth Court this morning, Friday, 24 January 2014.
