Seven people charged following death of woman - Watford

Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary to charge seven people following the death of a woman in Watford last October.

Shahana Uddin, aged 19, from Leavesden Road, Watford died on 11 October 2014, as a result of injuries sustained in a physical assault.

Details of those charged are as follows:

  • Salma Begum, aged 32, of Leavesden Road, Watford, has been charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
  • Suhail Uddin, aged 35, of Leavesden Road, Watford, has been charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
  • Laila Begum, aged 25 of Grove Road, Romford, has been charged with causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
  • Rehena Uddin, aged 21 of Leavesden Road, Watford, has been charged with causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
  • Tohel Uddin, aged 23, of Middle Ope, Watford, has been charged with causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
  • Jhuahal Uddin, aged 33, of Middle Ope, Watford, has been charged with causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
  • Jewel Uddin, aged 27, of Leavesden Road, Watford, has been charged with causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Adrian Foster, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: "Following an investigation by Hertfordshire Constabulary, a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against these people.

"Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary to charge them with various offences.

"The charges are in relation to the death of 19-year-old Shahana Uddin, on 11 October 2014, in Watford.

"The decision to charge was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

All seven people charged have been remanded in police custody to appear before Hatfield Magistrates' Court today, Friday, 08 May 2015.

Criminal proceedings are active and defendants have the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no commentary or reporting which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.
