Nuisance neighbour jailed - Bedford

Neighbour from hell John Williams has been locked up after making life a misery for a young Lithuanian woman who lived in the flat below his.

Today, Tuesday, 13 May 2014, a judge sent him to prison for a year after hearing how he had terrorised the woman.

Williams, 35, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment of the woman during a month long period last summer.

The court heard they were both living in the same block of flats in Grafton Street, Bedford. His flat was above hers and the court was told he would dump rubbish and used cat litter in her garden. It didn't stop there and he would swear at her warning her: "This will carry on until you move out."

Ignorant Williams, who was an unemployed binge drinker and a bully, even got her nationality wrong thinking she was from Poland.

Prosecutor Barry McElduff said things got so bad for the woman that she was forced to move out of her flat for a short while last July.

Dan Darnbrough, defending, said Williams was a loner who had since taken steps to reduce his drinking.

Mr Justice Davis told Williams: "Over a month you made that lady's life a misery."

He jailed him for 12 months and made a restraining order, which forbids him from making any contact with her when he comes out of prison.
