Man sentenced to 16 years for Bedford rape

05/03/2012

On Friday, 02 March 2012, a paedophile, who repeatedly raped an 8 year old girl, was jailed for 16 years.

The crimes of Paul FILSELL only came to light years later, when his victim attempted suicide and left a letter detailing what had happened to her six years before.

On Friday, 02 March 2012, Filsell, 37, appeared for sentence in custody, having been found guilty of two specimen counts of raping the youngster in Bedford during 2004.

Luton Crown Court heard during his trial how, back then, Filsell had been friendly with the young girl's mother and got to know her. The youngster trusted Filsell and liked him. That trust was repaid by him raping her at least ten times during 2004 when he managed to find himself alone with the youngster.

In 2006 Filsell, of Cardiff Road, Luton, was jailed for 4.5 years after grooming a 15 year old girl he had met through text messaging and having sex with her.

It was in 2010 that Filsell's earlier victim, who had kept quiet about what had happened to her in Bedford during 2004, tried to commit suicide. Luckily she survived, but found with her was a letter in which she set out what had happened and a police investigation began, which saw Filsell subsequently arrested and charged.

Passing sentence, Judge David Farrell QC, said: "You are a danger and a predatory paedophile."

The judge said it was clear the defendant had an interest in younger people.

"It's plain you are a person who wishes to associate with and have relationships with children - those who are under the age of consent" said the judge.

He jailed Filsell for 16 years, saying he was passing a substantial sentence for the protection fo the public. Filsell's name will be added to the Sex Offenders' Register.
