Man jailed for sexual offences on buses - Hertfordshire and London

An illegal immigrant living in this country targeted lone women travelling on buses so that he could sexually assault them a court heard today, Tuesday, 24 November 2015.

Gurvinder Singh carried out the two attacks seven years apart.

St Albans Crown Court was told police were able to get a DNA profile of Singh from a trace of saliva he had left behind on a 17-year-old girl's cheek when he kissed her in 2008, but because Singh, at that stage, wasn't known to police he remained at large.  However, when he grabbed the thigh of another young woman on a bus in March of this year and was was arrested weeks later, his DNA profile was found to match that from the 2008 assault.

Today, 31-year-old Singh of Featherstone Road, Southall, Middlesex, appeared for sentence on two charges of sexual assault following two separate trials in front of magistrates' in which he had denied the offences.

Nigel Ogborne, prosecuting for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), told how in August of 2008 the 17-year-old victim had boarded a number 258 bus in Wealdstone High Street to travel to work in Bushey, Herts. At Harrow Weald the defendant got on and sat next to her even though there were empty seats available. He briefly touched her leg and when she got off he followed her trying to engage her in conversation, tried to kiss her and touched her inappropriately. Eventually he made off, but the trace of saliva on her cheek left behind from his kiss was to provide police with a DNA profile.

On 25 March this year at around 7pm, the second victim got on the number 183 bus at Hendon Town Hall. Also boarding the bus was the defendant. Mr Ogborne said an hour into the journey he squeezed the woman's thigh through her leggings. She managed to take a picture of him on her mobile phone and got off at Harrow Bus Station where she was met by her father. That night she reported the incident to the police and the defendant was arrested in June of this year.

The court was told he ws an illegal immigrant who had been in the country since he was 15.

Judge Stephen Warner jailed him for 20 months and told him he will be automatically deported once he had finished his sentence. His name will also be added to the sex offenders' register.
