A woman student at Hertfordshire University was robbed in broad-daylight after being followed from a cashpoint in Hatfield.

The 21-year-old was spotted by Nicholas Haigh as she withdrew £10 from the ATM at the Co-op in Bishop's Rise. He followed her along Bishop's Rise and into Cavendish Way, where there are no CCTV cameras, Luton Crown Court heard today, Tuesday, 13 September 2016.

Daniel Siong, prosecuting for Thames and Chilter Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the victim was talking on her mobile to her boyfriend when she dropped the papers she was carrying. As she bent down to pick them up, Haigh, also 21, came up to her and said: "Give me all the money you have."  He was holding a knife with a 15cm blade. The victim handed over her purse and Haigh ran off. She still had her phone and rang her bank to cancel her cards, before calling the police.

The robbery happened between early afternoon on Sunday, 17 July this year.

Haigh was identified when CCTV from Bishop's Rise was examined and officers arrested him at his flat the following day. The flat was untidy and there was evidence of drug use, said Mr Siong.

Haigh, of Bishop's Rise, Hatfield, appeared for sentence from Bedford prison, having pleaded guilty to robbery and having an article with a blade. The Judge was told he had been sentenced to 36-months in 2014 for two robberies at pharmacies in Potters Bar and possessing an imitation firearm.

In a victim impact statement, the student said that since the robbery she did not feel safe walking alone. "I cannot believe I was robbed in the middle of the day in the street," she said.

Louie French, defending, said: "He is sorry for what he did. He intends to write to her to apologise. He is ashamed of his behaviour."

Judge Lynn Tayton QC told Haigh the robbery had an on-going effect on the victim's life. She sentenced him to 3 years in prison.
