Man jailed for kidnapping - Woodley

14/06/2013

A man appeared at Reading Crown Court today, Friday, 14 June 2013, and was jailed for six and a half years for assaulting and kidnapping a woman in Woodley on Boxing Day 2012.

Mark Withers,  aged 47, of Grazeley Road, Three Mile Cross, Reading pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping on 16 May, the first day of his trial. He had pleaded guilty to one count of common assault, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) during a previous hearing.

At around 8.15pm on 26 December last year, Withers broke into a property in Munro Avenue by smashing through a patio window. He assaulted the 37-year-old victim and her partner,  before forcing the victim from the house at knifepoint.

A struggle ensued and she was dragged down a number of streets, before being forced into a car and driven away.

Withers was apprehended around six hours later, in the early hours of 27 December,  after his car registration was circulated by police.

The Judge sentenced Withers to four years imprisonment for the kidnapping, 27 months imprisonment for ABH, three months for common assault, and three months for breaching a suspended sentence.  All the terms of imprisonment are to run consecutively, except for the last two, which are to run concurrently to each other.  Therefore, the total sentence is six and a half years imprisonment.  He was also given a restraining order.
