Man jailed for child sexual offences and indecent images - Welwyn Garden City

Sex offences he committed on a young girl in the 1970s finally caught up with Welwyn Garden City pensioner Keith Dewrance today, Thursday, 17 November 2016, when he appeared at St Albans Crown Court and was jailed for five years.

Passing sentence, Judge Andrew Bright QC told the 72-year-old that had he committed the offences today, he would have received substantially longer. But the Judge said he was governed by the sentencing guidelines as they were at the time, which meant the maximum sentence he could have imposed for the most serious offence was five years.

Dewrance, of Longcroft Lane, Welwyn Garden City, appeared for sentence having been found guilty earlier this year of seven counts of indecent assault on the child, as well as offences of gross indecency. He had pleaded guilty to seven offences of possessing indecent images of children and an offence of possessing an extreme pornagraphic image.

Dewrance had been living in Welwyn Garden City when he comitted the offences on the young girl between 1974 and 1979 when she was between the ages of seven and 12. Following his arrest in 2013, police checked his computer and discovered he had amassed a collection of over 5000 child sex abuse images as well as 248 moving clips of children being abused.

Judge Bright said the finding of the images showed that, despite the passing of time and the defendant's advancing years, he still had a sexual interest in children.

Passing sentence on Dewrance, the Judge told him: "The abuse you subjected the girl to continued for four to five years and it has blighted her life ever since. I am satisfied that what you did caused her serious psychological harm."
