Man jailed for cash mystery - Bedfordshire

A man who pleaded guilty to having £89,000 that he could not account for has today, Friday, 26 October 2012, been sentenced at Luton Crown Court to 12-months imprisonment.

Mark Holt, aged 47, of no fixed abode, but from the Buckinghamshire area, admitted possessing or acquiring criminal property under the Proceeds of Crime Act at an earlier hearing following his arrest on 29 September.

On that day a large bag of cash was seized when officers assisting at a routine traffic collision, between junctions 12 and 13 northbound on the M1, made the discovery. The driver had seemingly collapsed at the wheel after having an adverse reaction to medication; officers carried out their usual procedure of looking for identity documents and any medication that could assist him, but instead found a bag stuffed with cash.

A Cash Detention Order was granted on 02 October at Bedford Magistrates' Court and will now remain with police pending further investigations into its origin. It could then be subject to further court proceedings in which the police seek to permanently confiscate the money under the POCA legislation and then use it to fund further crime-fighting and community initiatives.
