Man charged with sex assault - Houghton Regis

Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), has authorised officers from the Bedfordshire Police to charge a 40-year-old man with sexually assaulting an elderly woman and verbally abusing a young woman.

Darren Emmerson of Parkside Drive, Houghton Regis, has been charged with sexually assaulting an 80-year-old woman in her home in Houghton Regis in the early hours of Monday, 18 March 2013, and a section 4 Public order offence against an 18-year-old woman in an alleyway, which also happened in the early hours of Monday, 18 March 2013.

Baljit Ubhey OBE, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: "Following an investigation by the Bedfordshire Police, a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against Darren Emmerson.

"Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from the Bedfordshire Police to charge Darren Emmerson with sex assault on a female, and using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour with intent to cause fear of/provoke unlawful violence.

"The charges are in relation to the sex assault of an 80-year-old woman in her home in Houghton Regis in the early hours of Monday, 18 March 2013, and a Section 4 Public Order offence against an 18-year-old woman in an alleyway, which also happened in the early hours of Monday, 18 March 2013.

"The decision to charge was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

Emmerson was remanded in police custody to appear before Luton Magistrates' Court this morning, Wednesday, 20 March 2013.
