Man charged with rape from 1988 - Reading

Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised officers from Thames Valley Police to charge a man with a rape dating back to 1988.

Gary Lee Dyer AKA Jimmy Lee Dyer, aged 54, of St Georges Street, Northampton, was charged last night, Wednesday, 11 June 2014, with rape.

The charge relates to an incident, which is alleged to have taken place in Heathfield Avenue, Tilehurst, in the early hours of 10 October 1988.  The victim, who was 18-years-old at the time, is now aged 44.

Adrian Foster, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: "Following an investigation by Thames Valley Police, a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against Gary Lee Dyer AKA Jimmy Lee Dyer.

"Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from Thames Valley Police to charge the man with rape.

"The charge relates to an incident, which took place on 10 October 1988, in Tilehurst.

"The decision to charge was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

Dyer has been remanded in custody to appear at Reading Magistrates' Court this morning, Thursday, 12 June 2014.
