Man charged with author's murder - Royston

Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit to charge a man with the murder of a woman in Royston.

Ian Stewart, aged 55, of Baldock Road, Royston, was charged on the evening of Friday, 15 July 2016, with murder, perverting the course of justice and preventing a lawful burial.

The charges are in connection with the death of Helen Bailey, aged 51, who was found deceased at her property in Royston on Friday, 15 July 2016.

Adrian Foster, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: "Following an investigation by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against Ian Stewart.

"Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit to charge Ian Stewart with murder, perverting the course of justice and preventing a lawful burial.

"The charges are in connection with the death of Helen Bailey, aged 51, who was found deceased at her property in Royston on Friday, 15 July 2016.

"The decision to charge was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."

Stewart was remanded in police custody and appeared at Hatfield Remand Court on Saturday, 16 July 2016, where he was further remanded to appear at St Albans Crown Court today, Monday, 18 July 2016.

Criminal proceedings are active and defendants have the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no commentary or reporting which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.
