A man, who met a woman in the town through the online dating site 'Plenty of Fish', sexually assaulted her at her home.

Roger King carried out the assault in February of this year as their relationship hit the rocks because of his controlling and jealous behaviour.

Today, Monday, 9 October 2017, St Albans Crown Court heard the assault on the woman and his behaviour towards her was another chapter in a series of offences against women.

Sentencing King, aged 50, to four years imprisonment, Deputy Circuit Judge, Graham Arran told him he was someone who had a history of interfering in the lives of others.

King, of Burgundy Croft, Welwyn Garden City, pleaded guilty to sexual assault on the woman by penetration and failing to comply with notification requirements.

Prosecutor Marion Smullen said it didn't take the victim long to realise King was a controlling and jealous man who wanted to know her movements and who she was in contact with. Miss Smullen said the woman was vulnerable because she was on anti-depressants.

The court was told the sexual assault took place on 1 February this year at her home. King had been staying there at the time and wanted to have sex with the woman. She told him she didn't want to, but he insisted and, despite her protestation, carried out a sex act on her.

"She felt violated and found it disgusting but he went ahead," said the prosecutor.

The court was told the woman eventually went to the police and in March of this year King was arrested.

Miss Smullen said that when he had stayed at the woman's house, he had failed to notify the authorities, which he was required to do so because of his previous offending history.

In 2009, he had been convicted of causing a female to engage in sexual activity without her consent for which he had been jailed for 48 months. In the years that followed, he had been convicted of stalking, harassment, breaching restraining orders, and failing my to comply with notification requirements.

Jailing King for four years today, the Judge said he had known the victim was a vulnerable person and had taken advantage of it. In addition to the custodial sentence, King was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order as well as a restraining order that forbids him from contacting the woman.
