A Broxbourne man, who followed a young woman as she got off a train and then sexually assaulted her as she made her way home along a riverside tow path, has today, Friday, 18 August 2017, been jailed for 21 months.

Adam Ramthor had been out for the night drinking heavily in London when he boarded the train at 3am to travel back to Broxbourne. As the train pulled into the station in the early hours of Saturday, 15 July this year, Ramthor spotted the young woman, who was also getting off.

St Albans Crown Court was told that from the platform he followed her up the stairs and out of the station and as she made her way along a towpath that bordered the river running adjacent to the railway line. Having got in front of the woman, Ramthor dropped down making out he was tying up a shoe lace, but as she past by he reached under her skirt and pulled at her underwear.

Judge Andrew Bright QC hearing the case was told the 21-year-old woman screamed and Ramthor ran off. But he stopped, turned and then made an indecent gesture to the terrified woman.

Ramthor, aged 21, of The Springs, Broxbourne, who works in recruitment, pleaded guilty to a charge of sexually assaulting the woman.

The court was told the woman had suffered psychological harm as a result of Ramthor's actions which had caused her to change her lifestyle and daily habits. She had sought counselling and was now apprehensive when traveling on trains or using public transport.

Passing sentence, Judge Bright told Ramthor that having listened to the case he had reached the conclusion he posed a risk to lone women he found attractive. Judge Bright said the victim was in no doubt that had she not stood up for herself that morning she would have been raped. "This woman is a changed woman as a result of her experience at your hands," said the Judge. He went on: "Your behaviour was utterly inexcusable and terrifying for this young woman and had a dramatic effect on her life and will continue to do so for many years to come."

In addition to the custodial sentence, Ramthor's name will go on the sex offenders' register for the next 10 years and he was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order.
