Man jailed for grooming teenage girl - St Albans

A 14-year-old girl from St Albans was groomed online by a teenager who travelled from Greater Manchester to meet her.

The girl had been persuaded by Ruman Ahmed, then aged 19, to send him pictures of her in her underwear over Snapchat, following explicit conversations on social media.

Ahmed, a Bangladeshi, who now faces deportation, also sent the girl an indecent photo of himself, St Albans Crown Court heard today, Monday, 23 October 2017.

Prosecutor Sarah Morris said that after four of five weeks of grooming, Ahmed paid £82 for a ticket to St Albans in February last year. He caught a taxi and met the girl near her home where he kissed her and touched her bottom.

Ahmed, now aged 21, of Rutherford Close, Hyde, SK14, appeared for sentence having pleaded guilty to meeting a child following sexual grooming and sexual assault.

Defending, Chantelle Stocks said Ahmed came to the UK in 2008 from Bangladesh when he was 13 after the death of his father. He is an overstayer who now faces deportation. She said he was an immature teenager himself at the time and had no previous convictions.

Judge Graham Arran jailed him for 12 months. He told him: "She was flattered by your attention. You were an adult, she was a child." In addition to the custodial sentence, Ahmed must register as a Sex Offender for 10 years.
