Groomer jailed for three years

An illegal immigrant from Uganda who groomed a 13-year-old girl for his own "sexual gratification" was jailed for 3 years on Friday, 10 February 2012.

Ismail Kiggundu, 29, encouraged the teenager to send him naked photographs of herself and persuaded her to travel from her home in Harpenden, Herts to his room in Mitcham, Surrey where they had sex.

Kiggundu met the vulnerable girl through dating site called Tagged. Althought the site was for over 18s only, the girl had signed up to it, St Albans Crown Court heard.

Even though he realised she was under age, Kiggundu, who told her he was 19, continued the relationship and encouraged her to bunk off school and see him.

Michael Speak, Senior Crown Advocate for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said, they first met at Rothamsted Park in Harpenden where he persuaded her to perform oral sex on him. She sent the defendant pictures of her naked, he sent her an explicit photograph of himself, and they exchanged texts through BBM messenger.

She travelled to his home in Mitcham, Surrey where they had oral and full sex. He had bought her a hoodie in London to hide her school uniform.

Mr Speak said the police were called on 03 October last year after the girl's mother had confiscated her mobile phone as a punishment and found photographs of her kissing an older man. There were also pictures of her with no clothes on, he said.

When the girl was interviewed by officers she said Kiggundu told her he would marry her when she was 16 and was going to buy her a ring.

Kiggundu of Commonside East, Mitcham, Surrey pleaded guilty to meeting a child following sexual grooming and two counts of sexual activity with a child.

Alex Krikler, defending, said: "He now regrets what he did. He has shown genuine contrition and remorse.

"He met her on a dating web site where he had put his true details. Once he met her he was aware of her age and he accepts what he did was utterly wrong. When he met her he should have stopped and reported it."

He said Kiggundu, who was an over-stayer in the UK, will be deported from the country when he has served his sentence. He said he had hoped to stay in the UK and join the army. Since his arrest and remand he said he had not been able to see his 3 -year-old son.

Judge John Plumstead told him: "You seduced this girl. She was unhappy at home. She was looking for someone to trust. You took the opportunity to indulge yourself. You encouraged her to take indecent images of herself and send them to you. You persuaded her to engage in sexual conduct. It was entirely for you own gratification."

He banned him from working with children and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life. Kiggundu will face deportation back to Uganda when he is released from his sentence.
