Father jailed for manslaughter of daughter - Bushey


A man appeared at St Albans Crown Court today, Thursday, 23 January 2014, and was sentenced to 20 years impriosonment for the manslaughter of his 11-year-old daughter Rebecca Thompson.

Simon Thompson, aged 52, pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and this plea was accepted by the prosecution.

At today's hearing the court heard how Rebecca had been strangled on 21 June 2013, by her father following a day trip to London Zoo. Later that day, Thompson was involved in a high speed accident. He sustained serious injuries and was arrested by officers from the Major Crime Unit when he was deemed medically fit.

Rebecca, who was due to start secondary school in the September, was found by her distraught mother on Saturday, 22 June 2013,  at her home address in Bushey.
