Burglar jailed - Potters Bar

A brave home owner who caught a burglar in his Potters Bar home followed the man as he made off down the road and then got on his phone to call the police. As a result, Romanian Malin Rostas was soon caught by police and found himself under arrest.

At St Albans Crown Court Rostas, 34, of Fairway Gardens, Ilford in Essex appeared for sentence Monday, 10 December 2012, after admitting burgling the victim's property in Thornton Road, Potters Bar and assault by beating.

He also admitted driving with no insurance and driving licence.

Geoffrey Porter prosecuting said it was in August this year that the victim, David Allen came back to his home to find the front door open and the defendant inside.

Rostas made off on foot and Mr Allen went inside to discover £50 was missing from a wallet.

"He chased after the defendant," said Mr Porter and said after confronting him the burglar threw the £50 onto the ground.

Mr Allen got on the phone to police at which point the defendant kicked him before jumping into a parked BMW.

However, because of the description of the defendant and car Mr Allen had been able to provide to the police, he was soon stopped and placed under arrest.

It was subsequently discovered Rostas was not insured to drive the car and didn't have a driving licence.

Judge Andrew Bright QC told the defendant "Mr Allen was a man in his 60s and plainly greatly shaken up by the experience."

He jailed Rostas for a total of 24 months.
