Wife guilty of attempted murder

29/01/2008

Today, at Stafford Crown Court, Katie Knight, 28, was found guilty of the attempted murder of her husband, Lee Knight, between January 2005 and April 2005 leaving him severely disabled.

Knight was found guilty of poisoning her husband with antifreeze in an attempt to benefit from his life insurance to pay off her debts which she had accumulated without her husbands knowledge; researching the toxic effects of substances she put the antifreeze in his wine in an attempt to give him kidney failure and heart attack resulting in his death.

Mr Knight survived the poisoning which has left him deaf, blind and requiring a kidney transplant.

Speaking after the trial Katy Halls, Staffordshire CPS spokesperson said: The Crowns case was that this was a cold and calculated attack on Mr Knight. Knight had every intention to kill her husband by poisoning him with the toxic substance.
Evidence was gathered from her computer showing that she had researched the effects of different substances ensuring she used the most lethal. There has been an enormous amount of work involved in prosecuting this case successfully which has only been possible through close collaboration between the police and CPS.
We are pleased that the case against Knight has resulted in her conviction and our thoughts are with Mr Knight whose life has been so tragically affected by this.
