Man guilty of attempted rape of girl

22/01/2008

Today, at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Jamel Motsepe, 26, of no fixed abode was found guilty of attempting to rape a girl in April 2007, false imprisonment of and theft of a mobile phone from another woman earlier the same night.

Motsepe found his victim as she looked for a cat which had escaped, he forced her on a long walk where he found a secluded woodland area and attempted to rape her. Motsepe then made his victim walk the long way back to Burslem where she finally managed to call her mum, who was with the police, and got away.

Speaking after the trial, Bob Price, CPS Crown Advocate, who led the prosecution team said: An offence of this nature is always distressing but the circumstances of this case are particularly horrific. By chance she has been prayed on in a sadistic and calculated way.

The courage of the victim and the strength of character she has shown whilst giving her evidence in court is a real testament to her bravery.

The CPS has been involved from the outset and our specialists in the prosecution of sexual offences have worked closely with the police to ensure this dangerous man is removed from society for a significant period of time. Mercifully this type of offence is very rare.

Sentencing has been adjourned for two months for psychiatric reports to assess his dangerousness.
