Terence Lai, 54 appeared at Exeter Crown Court on Friday 5th May charged with sexual assault of a child under 13 years old.

Mr Lai from Devon was employed as a private tutor at the time he committed the offence and met his victim through his work. Mr Lai denied the charges but was subsequently found guilty by a jury.

His Honour Judge Mercer said: "You did what you did because you were infatuated. It was very wrong."

Lesley Ness, Senior Crown Prosecutor, CPS South West said "Terence Lai was sentenced for the abuse of a young child. Terence Lai abused his position of trust, letting himself and his profession down by his activities."

Mr Lai was sentenced to 3 years' immediate imprisonment and will be required to sign the Sex Offenders Register.

Lesley added "I would like to express my appreciation to the victim and the victimís family, without whom this prosecution would not have been possible. They have displayed immense courage during investigation and the court case and I hope that the sentencing imposed brings them some comfort."

Mr Lai was also given restrictions and cannot undertake any activity or employment which is likely to at some time allow him unsupervised access to a female under 16 years old.
