Man charged with murder of Melanie Road after cold case review

The CPS has authorised Avon and Somerset police to charge Christopher Hampton with the murder of Melanie Road, who was killed near her home in Bath in 1984.

CPS South West Senior Crown Prosecutor Huw Rogers said: "Following a cold case review into the death of Melanie Road, Avon and Somerset police approached the CPS for charging advice. Having reviewed all the evidence available to me, I concluded that it was appropriate to charge Christopher Hampton with murder.

"Any decision by the CPS does not imply any finding concerning guilt or criminal conduct; the CPS makes decisions only according to the tests set out in the Code for Crown Prosecutors and they are applied in all decisions on whether or not to prosecute.

"Proceedings are now ongoing and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is very important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
