John Alway sentenced to 11 years

14/06/2013

Bristol teacher John Alway has today been handed a custodial sentence of 11 years following his conviction of 15 counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault against seven former pupils.

CPS Senior Crown Prosecutor Allie Longhorn said:  "The Crown Prosecution Service take crimes of this nature very seriously and will work with Avon and Somerset police to prosecute wherever there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to do so. This is possible even when the offences took place some time ago, as in this case.

"John Alway abused the trust placed in him by these girls and their parents. Today's sentences send out a clear message that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"I would like to thank all the young women who came forward to report the abuse they suffered at the hands of their teacher. It is so important that crimes of this nature are brought to light so the perpetrators can be brought to justice. John Alway's victims demonstrated great courage and while nothing will compensate them for what they went through as children I hope that the conclusion of this case will at least bring them a degree of closure."

John Alway has been told to sign the sexual offenders register.

The verdicts, delivered by the jury at Bristol Crown Court on 7 and 11 June, were:

  • Complainant one - Alway guilty of four indecent assaults;
  • Complainant two - Alway guilty of two indecent assaults and one sexual assault;
  • Complainant three - Alway not guilty of one indecent assault and not guilty of one sexual assault;
  • Complainant four - Alway guilty of two indecent assaults;
  • Complainant five - Alway guilty of two indecent assaults;
  • Complainant six - Alway guilty of two indecent assaults;
  • Complainant seven - Alway guilty of two indecent assaults and not guilty of two sexual assaults;
  • Complainant eight - Alway not guilty of two sexual assaults, guilty of one indecent assault and not guilty of one indecent assault
